From Hell
"From Hell" takes you back to turn of the century England, and immerses you in the bloody atmosphere of the day.
This is a spellbinding retelling of the "Jack the Ripper" story, a mystery that was never officially solved. "From Hell" offers a fresh theory of who the Ripper was, and what his motives may have been... but not before throwing you a significant number of curves and false leads first.
The cinematography of this film alone is worth the admission price. You feel the terror of those mean streets, and your eye catches the gleam of the knife from the mouth of a darkened alley. You leave the theater feeling as if you have seen much more gore and blood than is actually portrayed, because the director has let your imagination fill in the blanks better than he could ever have captured on film.
Perhaps because we recently reviewed Jeepers Creepers, I felt the movie did not have quite the same amount of "punch", and so only gave it 3 chills. Otherwise, this is an almost perfect film, well worth seeing any time of the year, but particularly appropriate around Halloween.
Go see it, and rent it when it hits the video stores. Make it a Depp Double Feature with Sleepy Hollow, another excellent film of his.
