Highlander
One of my all-time favorite films. This flick has it all... gorgeous cinematography, incredible action, great special effects, and a story that truly touches the heart.
The concept of a select few who are genetically destined to live forever conjures up fantastic stories all on its own. How do you keep from being discovered by jealous "normals?" What happens when you fall in love and have to watch your loved ones wither away? How do you deal with being "different" from everyone around you? Lots of fertile story material right there. Add the concept of a manifest destiny for all the immortals, who must compete to be the last one standing, and you get a powerful tale to tell.
The acting is good, the scenery is breathtaking, and the visual transitions between "today" and "the past" are phenomenal. As if that were not enough, a driving, yet touching, soundtrack by Queen caps it off as a completely enjoyable film.
Excellent movie. Five Eyes for Highlander. Definitely worth renting or buying. Get the DVD if you can for even more delights.
(By the way... do not bother with Highlander II. It is such a disappointment that most of the Highlander fan community refuses to acknowledge its existence. Other Highlander sequels will be reviewed later.)
