Something Wicked This Way Comes
Mr. Dark's carnival has come to town, and you better be careful what you wish for... you might get it.
This is one of my all-time favorites. There is no gore, no horrible monsters, and very little in the way of special effects. What makes this film work is the writing.
Ray Bradbury, known for his science fiction stories, wrote this tale of childhood terror. He is a master at developing "atmosphere". The movie is remarkably successful in capturing the essence of the original book. Mr. Bradbury has a gift for tapping into deep parts of our psyche, where we are all still children. In this case, he puts us back into the world of being a child, with all the wonder, possibilities, and ... fears. While presented from a child's point of view, this is not a film directed for children. The very adult issues of guilt, regret, and desire all play important parts in shaping the story as well.
Highly recommended. Excellent movie that few people know about. Children and adults can both enjoy it in on a variety of levels. Rent or buy it for Halloween. Look for the book, too. An excellent, chilling read.
