Haunted Cape May Tour

Scuttles and his favorite ghoul spent the weekend in a Bed & Breakfast down in Cape May last weekend. November is actually quite a perfect time to visit. This haunted-looking town begins to really take on an even more pronounced spectral feel. Perhaps it was the pair of "Ghosts of Cape May" books we have been reading, but we were really quite primed for ghostly encounters and eerie tales.

So what could be better than to find a brochure in our B&B that advertised "Haunted Cape May Tours"? Luckily, they still run the tours on Saturday nights in November. The brochure promised serious investigation and not folk tales. So we stopped by the Hotel Macomber and purchased our tickets early and went off to enjoy dinner on the Mall.

When we returned, we were amazed to find nearly 70 people waiting on the boardwalk. The number grew even larger as we set off on the tour. And fittingly enough, we stopped right across the street besides the Hotel Macomber only to find that the place we purchased the tickets from was indeed the first haunted stop.

I won't spoil the tour for those who might go, but suffice to say that our hostess and guide was an attractive, credible woman named Diane who had knack for keeping things believable. She guided us through the streets of Cape May, lantern in hand, for almost two hours, and was able to be heard by everyone in the group, despite its size. Along the way we heard tales of haunted B&Bs and Hotels, some of which freely admit being haunted. (She also was discrete in not naming or pointing out the specific haunted establishments who did not wish to be associated with ghosts.)

Another point worth mentioning is the audio tapes. Al Rauber, the founder of the tour, is a parapsychological investigator who has appeared on a number of TV shows, including "Unsolved Mysteries", "Encounters", The Other Side" and "The Paranormal Border". Mr. Rauber has produced a number of chilling recordings of spectral voices, and Diane played one that was captured in the very building we were standing in front of. This did produce one of the chills of the evening. These tapes are for sale for those interested in hearing more about EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena).

There were several chills felt throughout the evening, and not all of them were from the night air... Highly recommended.
